So we rehearsed last night in preparations for the Prince tribute concert which will be held November 15th and it was incredible.

So many of you know about Stacy, who sings with Collective Hallucination on many shows. I don't have to go into how awesome she is.

What I'll do instead is talk about Jamonte' Black and Kmonte'!

Let me start by saying Kmonte' is, hands down, one of my favorite male vocalist in Houston. Dude got some pipes on him! So we were blazing through some Prince tunes and Kmonte' opened his mouth to sing and it was back in the day all over again for me!!

Then Jamonte' Black, along with Stacy, started belting out those background vocals and it was like Oh My GOD..

So, anyway, as we periodically watched the tv, (election night), it dawned on me that I was in the room with greatness.

Ant talks about the Prince show....

Since I formed my band in 1999, people have always looked for me to do some Prince stuff. I have always avoided, as best I could, doing some Prince stuff. LOL..There's been the occasional "Raspberry Beret" or "The Cross", but really nothing deep and in depth. And doing those two song has been rare.

The reason why I strayed away from doing Prince tunes with my band, is because I just didn't want to be that other Prince fan with a guitar doing Prince tunes.. I mean damn, Prince can do Prince better than anybody anyway.

Well, after I had the opportunity to actually jam with Prince on stage a couple years ago, it dawned on me that hey, the time is coming when you and your band are gonna have to do some Prince stuff.

So I started toying around with the idea of doing some Prince tunes with my band late last year. I started going through my very vast, HUGE Prince collection and it has taken me almost one year to pull this together. Picking the right songs, the right singers, etc has been a labor of love. I figured if I do Prince, let's do PRINCE and not just have one or two songs in a set list, but have a set list full of Prince tunes...Ya'll know how I like to do it...

Now, the time has finally come.. COLLECTIVE HALLUCINATION will do an all Prince show on November 15th..Ahhh, what magic that will be!!

We plan on doing some Prince tunes spanning his full career from 1978 to 2008 with the exception of 1984, (The Purple Rain era). I have, by design, decided to not include any tunes from The Purple Rain era because all the Prince tribute bands and cover bands perform Prince tunes from that era without paying any attention to the fact that there are 29 other years of great music from the iconic artist.

And yes, there will be some B-side singles performed, some rare album cuts and yes many of his hits.. (can u say "Kiss"?).

If the rehearsals are any indication, the show is going to be incredible. Totally incredible.

We have lead vocals being performed by Kadrae, (first set) and Kmonte' (second set), with back ground vocals being performed by some of Houston's best female vocalist...

So, with all of that being said....Here's the information below;

Collective Hallucination performs a very special show honoring the music of World Reknown artist Prince!

This one night only show is being brought to you by Sunnyside Posse Mgmt., with special guest performers Kadrae and Kmonte'

Saturday, November 15th at Legend's Jazz Cafe'

Tickets-Presale-$10.00 (on sale November 4th through 13th)

Tickets-Door-$13.12

Legend's is located at 1004 N. San Jacinto @ I-10 in downtown Houston.

77002

Doors open at 8pm

Show starts at 9pm.

Hear music spanning Prince's career from 1978 to 2008..

Not just the hits...Hear some rare gems from the Prince catalog including........?

There will be a lot of musical surprises in store!!

If you are a true Prince fan..This is the show you want to be at!!!!!

Legend's is quickly becoming the place to be as you wind down your Wednesdays and last night cemented what so many people all ready know...Houston has got some tremendous talent!!

The night started out with my good friend, guitarist multi instrumentalist Robin Kirby and her flute player Laurie.. They started the night with one song and that got the crowd, (small but into it), going.

Next up, the Houston songbird Caretta Bell. Let me preface this by saying I LOVE CARETTA BELL. No one does what Caretta does as well as Caretta does it and she did it last night!! Once Caretta hit the stage, I knew it was going to be a magical night. Caretta is the real deal and she showed why she stepped out on faith two years ago and quit her job to pursue a career in music. Caretta can and will make it.

Her voice is mesmerizing and she had everyone in the building, (including Joe Carmouche himself), applauding. Caretta had an encore at the end of the night. That's how hot and on fire Caretta was last night.

Then came Mark Capon all the way from New York. Let me say this, this man can play a guitar like you've never heard! OMG, when Mark plugged in his gutiar and started playing that cool hand jazz I was in awe. I haven't heard anyone play with such smooth accuracy and mellow intensity like that since Joe!! LoL..This guy was all the greats, Wes Montgomery, Lee Ritenour, Jobim and more rolled into one. I purchased his cd "The Jazz Guitar of Mark Capon" and I'll be reviewing it real soon. Please note: T.L. and Angela Bonton...If you are reading this, you need to get this guy's cd...SOON..

Mark was later joined on stage by Ms. Evette Busby and that lady can blow the roof off any building anywhere in the USA!! They did the classic "At Last" and it was a real treat.

After that I hit the stage with Evette and we performed Prince's "Do Me Baby" acoustic!! Talk about wow!! Oh man, it was crazy. I then went into the classic soul song "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay"..

Caretta Bell then closed the night out with an encore performance.

It was a lovely night and for those of you who missed it. You really missed a treat...

Blue Eyed Soul

Everyone has their definition of what it means to be a soul singer. To some it's Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding or Luther Vandross.
To others it's Steven Tyler, Mick Jagger, Wynonna or Darryl Hall.
To me, it's a culmination of all those artist and more. See, Soul is something that comes from that place deep in the heart, deep in the soul, if you will.

I witnessed Soul recently at The Last Concert Cafe' when I went to see Kenneth Scott and The Cosmic Party perform. At first glance Kenneth Scott doesn't strike you as someone with soul. Heck he doesn't strike you as someone who can sing.

Kenneth Scott has the appearance of a guy who loves rock and roll and going to the beach, just hanging out. But looks can be deceiving. Kenneth Scott is by all definitions a big guy, who is immensley talented, more kind than a teddy bear and real cool to talk to. Forget the fact that Kenneth is a big white guy who seems like he'd be more comfortable at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert than an Al Green concert. Let's forget that for a minute and focus on the music. Ahh, yes..the music. Dude is bad assed. He's cold, he's superbad.

Oh, and he plays a mean guitar. His band, is by definition incredibly talented. The guys are, (in the words of James Brown), on the one, and they are good at what they do.

The most striking thing about this band though is the vocals. Kenneth has that old, aching soul in his voice and his lyrics are acutely beautiful and haunting. He's a rock dude by every definition, but deep down you get every sense of a SOUL singer aching to reach out to the masses. The only thing missing from this band is two soulful/church bred female background vocalist, (ie; black soul sistahs). That's a small issue and I'm sure by the end of next month, one that will be remedied.

Having known Kenneth Scott for a few years now, I had no idea he was this talented. Sure, I've seen him perform acoustic shows, and yes we've sat down and chatted, had breakfast together and we've broken bread together, but I've never witnessed Kenneth Scott at home in his element; on a big stage. I can't say enough about his original compositions which are inspiring, and that's just saying the least of what could be said about them and if you read between the lines...that's a lot!

I left the venue in awe at what I had heard and seen. I called a friend of mine I had invited and I told him he missed a great show. I told him that I had seen the best of The Black Crowes mixed with the cool of Bob Marley, the gospel of Steven Curtis Chapman and yes the soul...the soul of
a true musician...a musician on a mission.

In 1999 I started Collective Hallucination, with the idea of having a band that was nothing short of incredible. Now 7 years, more than 100 shows and over 70 something bandmates later, my desires have come true.

They couldn't have come true without a lot of blood sweat and tears and as I sit here reflecting on all I've gone through and all I've accomplished as a band leader the one thing that sticks out for me, is the undying support the fans have given me, personally and as a band.

There were times when CH should not have gone on stage, and still yet you stood with us. There were times when CH should not have gotten off the stage and you screamed for more. You told your friends and brought friends, family and new fans to our shows. We gain new fans every single show and I don't mean just one or two, I mean double digit fans. I have over 50 something MySpace friend request that I need to go through, (and I go through every last one before approving a friend request), and we get more than 10 request a day!!!

You've purchased our merchandise and you've spread the word about the band and more.
Some of you have come to so many shows we feel like you're part of the band!!!

To me, this isn't about just getting on stage and playing music. To me, it's about passion, it's about love, it's about music. It's about spreading the sound of CH to the masses without compromising our sound for the sake of a dollar.

Nowadays we choose the shows we want, (and trust me we get performance request daily), we have a venue to call home here in Houston and we continue to strive for what it is we really want..to actually make a living doing what we do!! Will it happen? Only time can tell, but there is nothing to keep us from acheiving that goal at this point.

To our fans, friends and family, I send a very humble thank you and we will see you soon!!
Much love--Ant Boogie and the CH crew.

Ant Boogie sat at the director's seat on March 29th one day before his 6 year anniversary to direct his band's first music video for the song "This Is Our Love Song".

Ant says it was a very different thing for me but I totally enjoyed it. When you're a band and band leader on a budget you've got to cut corners and make due with whatever you got.

The video features cameo's by some of Ant's favorite artist including Wayside Drive, K'monte', Michelle Rukny, Kadrae and former CH drummer The Time Keeper among others!

The video, also being edited by Ant Boogie, will be made available by the 15th of April--TAX DAY!

Ant Boogie's Music Review-"A Fine Time" by Joni NehRita

I met Joni Neh Rita on MySpace about a year or two ago and I was moved by the voice coming out of such a petite young lady. Talented, yes..gifted, yes.

So I waited for a long time for her to release her cd. I would visit her page periodically and leave a comment like, "ummm. when's the cd coming out?"

She would reply back and tell me soon. So, patiently I kept waiting.

Well, her cd is finally out. Was it worth the wait? YES!
"A Fine Time" by Joni NehRita is an indi artist masterpiece. No, there's not a lot of "new" ideas here, instead there's a lot of fresh takes on the idea of recording and releasing original GREAT music! NOTE:Please pay heed a lot of you major label artist!!

Her well crafted melodies and lush vocal arrangements along with the superb musicianship found on this release makes it a must for lovers of the great soul/pop tunes that remind a listener of the period when music was music and not just background filler.

She's quite the vocalist as well, reminding me of the Minnie Riperton's, Stephanie Mills' and Shanice Wilson's of days gone by. Joni seemingly glides through each song with very little effort as one can tell she has taken time to perfect her craft. Joni handles all lead and background vocals on the disc as well as keys and programming on a few of the tunes.

Clocking in at a few minutes past 40, the 9 song set will have you pressing rewind while taking that long drive with the top down and the music blaring. Wear your shades, these are sunny, bright tunes that will make you feel good!

HVM Choice cuts include the opener "How Can It Be?" , the funky and infectious "You Left", (which is in heavy rotation on the MP3 player), the 80's styled "How 2 Get Thru" the Erykah Baduish "On My Way" and the reggae tinged "The Way Of The World".

All in all I'd give this cd a definite 5 out of 5 stars. Joni has a bright future ahead of her.
You all can visit Joni at www.myspace.com/joninehrita or purchase her cd at www.cdbaby.com/joninehrita.

I guess after waiting as long as I had it is indeed a fine time!

Ant took his own money to finance his band's own shows, paying for the rental of the venues, flyers, advertisements, buying his own PA equipment, renting trailers or whatever else was needed to get from one show to the other. "I even set up everything in the early years from the drum kit, to the PA to the bass rig all by myself. All the band had to do was come in, plug in and play. I would then break everything down, pack it up and take it back to wherever it belonged. Most of the time I did it all by myself." These days Ant says he's not picking up anything but his axe as he has a real road crew and the whole works.

"This is something that went on for years," Ant says, "and I lost friends, band mates and so much more along the way. I was focused and determined. Something that a lot of "musicians/artists" these days aren't. They're looking for the overnight big break success story and it doesn't work that way. So I lost a lot of friends and band mates along the way, but it's cool. Looking back, it was all worth it!"

These days, the band is doing impressive things that not too many bands, (especially in Houston), doing original music can say. For instance, the band is working on a cross promotions event with Houston area McDonald's

restaurants

as well as getting paid top dollar to perform at venues, (both public and private), doing their brand of funk/soul/rock and jazz. They were nominated in 2006 as R&B act of the year going against major label artist Brooke Valentine (Def Jam) and former Destiny's Child singer Latoya (Capitol). "That was a defining moment for us. It meant someone had noticed! Although Brooke Valentine won, Ant says it's great being nominated just because I've worked hard for a long time to bring the CH sound to speakers everywhere and people are starting to take notice and say, hey…that band is good!"

"Things are definitely different now than they were then. I'm glad I had the faith to keep going because there were times I just wanted to throw in the towel and just say to hell with it, but I couldn't. It was in me to keep going."

It took Ant Boogie a lot of faith as he had moments in his career where it just seemed like the floor was being pulled from right under his feet and he was falling into a bottomless pit. "I remember when the band had a show and the vocalist didn't show up cause she was mad or something", he says, "Luckily the band had been rehearsing some new instrumental tunes and a few other tunes. We pulled the show off without a hitch. There was even a show in the early, early years where the lead vocalist came for soundcheck and then left and never came back. Weird, huh?" LOL.

"It's all about faith and some folks just lost it after doing gig after gig and literally not getting paid for it. Imagine how I must have felt because I still had to shell out money to put these shows on. I kept the faith though. It's so easy to lose faith and give in to the whole idea of I won't get paid if I'm not doing someone else's tunes. I thought about it more than once, but I refused to go that route. Not that there's anything wrong with it, it just wasn't me."

Ant says he's gone through band mates like a drive through, "Band mate after band mate would come and go. Some were fired, some quit, others got sick and some moved out of town on the premise of the grass being greener. I remember one young lady came and rehearsed with the band for like two weeks before a show, did one show and quit that night right after the show saying she was moving to Cali because she felt like she had what it takes to make it!!

The name stayed the same although the members changed. It came to a point when I felt like Carl McIntosh of Loose Ends, Bluey of Incognito or Jazzie B. of Soul II Soul, where I had a revolving door of musicians and vocalist. I kept focused though and kept going…moving ever forward to my goal of having a band of infinitely talented, faithful and driven individuals."

"I remember midway through recording our 2003 cd "The Peripheral Moment", I had to let go of the lead vocalist because it just wasn't working out the way I planned. (He recently had a scuffle with that former lead vocalist estranged husband).

"By the time that cd had come out I didn't have a band at all!!!!", he says laughing, "it was a really strange time as I was feeling the pain of the cost to record this cd and the need to recoup some of the money that had gone into it. I was sweating bullets. It was funny because if you read the credits the only consistent player on the cd on every song was me!! There was literally no band when the cd was recorded or released!"

Ant says he thought he had learned his financial lesson when in 2001 he spent all of his money to record the band's first cd "Heavy Rhyme Experience Part II", an ode to The Brand New Heavies who had recorded and released a cd called "Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1" with some of the hottest rappers at the time. The Collective Hallucination cd was recorded with some of Houston's hottest poets and then shelved before it was released due to lack of funds to have it properly done. "Keep in mind this was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before the digital age, so you couldn't just set up some songs and have them downloaded. I think at the time almost every poet featured on that cd was angry with me except maybe two of them. What they didn't understand was the fact that it cost to record, release, promote, distribute and market a cd. They just knew it had been recorded and it should have been out. Man, those were the days," Ant Boogie says reflectively.

These days Ant Boogie says he can look back at all those years as a learning experience which has prepared him for the inevitable...SUCCESS on a very good scale! The band is currently working on it's 5th cd, (the 4th cd comes out later this year and is already recorded and ready to be mixed and mastered). "I'm working with a bunch of great people who have faith, not only in themselves, but the music and me as well. They are all very, very spiritual in their beliefs as well. It's like from time to time we might have our own little band bible study when we're not joking and playing around or rehearsing. I talk to all of my bandmates everyday. We break bread together, laugh, joke and cry together. I love them so much. They are the greatest group of individuals to be around. It's the best band family experience I've ever had! The band also takes time out to roll up their sleeves, grab a shovel and dig. These cats will go out and help promote shows, help break down equipment and do whatever needs to be done to keep this well oiled machine on the tracks. That's a complete first to have a whole band pitching in."

Another great thing Ant says is he sells at least 3 CH cds a day almost everyday! "Both "The Peripheral Moment" and "Listen and Believe", (the band's latest cd) are currently selling pretty well as we are opening up to a whole new audience. We have a new single from our forthcoming cd coming out in April and I am anticipating high sells for it as well. Now's the time for Collective Hallucination and it feels good!"

Ant is also in the studio working with Dominique, a Houston based singer/songwriter who Ant says has the talent, drive and look to take her places. "This young lady can write songs just as quickly as I write the music. It's like we're an Elton John/Bernie Taupman team. She's awesome!" Ant just recently put a band together for Dominique and he says soon she'll be doing shows in and around the Houston area. He says there will be shows where Dominique and her band will open for CH and there will be moments when CH will open for her! I'm very optimistic about the future with Dominique as well as Collective Hallucination," Ant said recently.

The band also has a great support/help system in place.
So, I'm sitting here going over a list of over 20 songs in which Collective Hallucination will record for the new cd "The Eternal Quest For Authenticity". Not only that we're gonna record an update of "My Girl and My Guitar" which will be the video mix. Yaaaaaay!! There's gonna be a video to "My Girl and My Guitar"!

Anyway aside from all of that I just put the finishing touches on Collective Hallucination's official Electronic Press Kit! You'll have to visit the Collective Hallucination news page to get more information on that. It has been a grueling two weeks as I've been in the studio almost every evening into the night into the morning with my man D. Berry over at localsounds.net working on this DVD. It's nice though.

But man did I run into some problems along the way!! I'll write a blog about it at my MySpace site real soon.

So anyway I'm listening to this artist Diva Blue aka Alison Crockett right now and I must say she is on the jam tip. I'm feeling her in a major way. I'm gonna have to purchase her cd.

I had never heard of her. I was in Google looking for information on Bridgette McWilliams, (a hot singer who is crazy off the chain), and her name came up. So I followed the link to CD Baby and bam this chick hit me with not only her voice but her look. I mean wow..

Anyway, so while I'm listening to this I'm going over my song list for the CH cd that's gonna kick major booty in 2007 and I'm so excited!!

Well that's it for now.
Be Cool...

Prince---Ant Boogie One Night 5 Minutes On Stage

Long story short when Prince and band (drummer and bassist from Houston also), went into "Play That Funky Music" they challenged anyone in the audience to come up and sing the song, provided he or she knew the lyrics..Well, being an old school junkie I knew the lyrics and I ended up on stage with the man and Tamar. I'd like to think I had the whole house rocking since I looked out and saw hands in the air and everyone doing the hip hop bounce on the hook. I was in Heaven cause that's the largest audience I've ever gotten my groove on with to this date and man now I know how it feels to rock a crowd of 1000 plus folks..Prince was trippin cause I actually knew the lyrics to the song. He had a look on his face like this dude really knows this song..Well, what can I say..LOL. I love the funk and I live for it!!!

So anyway fast forward. I hung out backstage, (thanks John Broussard) and met Prince. We talked a little about music and gear. He didn't wanna share his secrets with me, but it's all good. I did get some Prince guitar picks though. COOL...So Prince is as cool as anyone I've ever met. I mean he's like really cool. I'm so glad I finally met him. It's crazy because all these years I thought Prince would be stand offish, I mean he's Prince, but he's quite the cordial and nice man. I'm so glad for Tamar. She used to sing at High Volume Music, (my music store), when she was a kid. Now she's grown up and making noise with the coolest man in Rock and Soul.

Her show, her show was off the chain mind you.

Ant Boogie on stage with Tamar

Ant Boogie on stage with Prince and Tamar

Joseph Washington is a hot, upcoming artist from Houston whom I've had the pleasure of meeting. His debut cd, "When God Made A Woman" is the kind of cd that would make Babyface, Brian McKnight and the late Luther Vandross proud indeed.

In the words of Joseph Washington, this cd is dedicated to women everywhere. It's a romantic, passionate and truly revealing the appreciation of women collection of songs. He says he wrote the songs on this cd to show how much he appreciates women and how much we as men should appreciate women.

Joseph will perform songs from his cd on February 10th at Dan Electro's as a special guest of my band Collective Hallucination. CH will be his backing band. It promises to be a show worth seeing.

Ladies if you long for a cd that speaks the language you speak "When God Made A Woman" is the cd for you. It's available at Amazon.com as well as many other online retailers across the globe.

For more on Joesph Washington please visit www.mbue.com.

Oh yeah and ladies, he's single..

I'm sitting here reflecting on the past two months, (December and January), and how blessed I've been. The High Volume Music show is kicking major butt over there at www.localsounds.net, The Spot One podcast show is growing in listenership. Visit www.spot1show.com for more information on the show.

Collective Hallucination, my absolute favorite band in the world is literally kicking it into high gear! We've got magazine and newspaper coverage coming, (you'll get details as they unfold), we're working on some funky, smelly new music for our upcoming cd Welcome To Where We Are and we are just getting love from all over the world!

The blessings continue to flow and I'm just elated. I'm literally at a lost for words everyday I wake up. All I can say is wow, thank u Jesus. Look for a major annoucement coming in February that's going to further enhance my place in the industry. I'm so excited and I just can't hide it!

Now, I'd like to take time to reflect on the latest edition of Spot One. I had in the studio with me legendary jazz guitarist Joe Carmouche, hot bassist Mr. Brian Baldwin of the upcoming soon to be one of your favorite rock bands The Googe and one of my favorite rap artist of all time, the legendary OG Style.

We talked about paying dues, respecting the craft, and staying true to self while trying to carve a niche and name in the music industry here in Houston. We had a ball. I mean sitting there talking to Joe who has been at a it a long time and OG Style, who was one of the original artist signed to Rap a Lot records back in the day was awe inspiring. Listening to Brian talk about the hustle and how he stays on top of it. It kind of put a perspective on all that I've been working to accomplish since starting my band.

Make sure you all visit www.spot1show.com and take a listen to this week's show. You'll enjoy it for sure.

Well, as we roll into February be sure to get ready to check out Collective Hallucination at Dan Electro's on the 10th!!!

The excitement builds!!

Peace
Ant Boogie
